Cape Point National Park

The drive from Cape Town south through the Peninsula and on to Cape Point National Park is widely hailed as one of the most dramatic and beautiful in the world. Coursing steeply up Chapman’s Peak, just beyond Hout Bay, and to one’s right and far below, is the surging, swelling icy green Atlantic. This is surely one of the most awe-inspiring drives to be found anywhere on the globe.

The sheer grandeur of the view will take your breath away. Finally, the Peninsula’s mountainous spine to one’s left yields to flatter terrain and as it flattens, so one spies off to the left the glittering, calmer blue waters of False Bay. Your drive is now through the Cape’s indigenous vegetation known as fynbos (fine bush), and this area constitutes the smallest and most richly diverse of the earth’s six floral kingdoms boasting unique plants and flowers.

Cape Point itself was dubbed the “Cape of Storms’ by explorer Bartolomeu Dias in 1488 and treated with overwhelming respect by sailors rounding the Point. Today, the Cape Point National Park forms part of the southernmost section of the greater Table Mountain National Park.
