Cape Town Stadium
What a compelling start to our much anticipated drive down the Peninsula! The Cape Town Stadium evokes the strongest feelings of nostalgia and sheer emotion whenever I drive past. And the reason is simple – the iconic and never to be forgotten Fifa 2010 World Soccer Cup! And this stadium played it’s part.
Prior to 2010 it was known as the Green Point Stadium. It had history on it’s side but it was not deemed good enough for the demands of Fifa. So it was demolished and a brand new stadium arose. In October 2009, the city asked it’s citizens to suggest a name for the new stadium and overwhelmingly it voted for it’s current name – Cape Town Stadium.
This magnificent stadium hosted the semi finals between the Netherlands and Uruguay. Anyone who was there will never forget it – it brought the city of Cape Town and indeed of South Africa, to a complete standstill…
